Why Is My Brush Not Working in Photoshop?

Last updated on February 23, 2023 @ 12:53 pm

There are a few reasons why your brush may not be working in Photoshop. One reason could be that you don’t have the right brush selected. Every Photoshop brush has its own unique settings, so make sure you have the right brush selected for the effect you’re trying to achieve. You can also check if the right layer is selected and not locked. Another reason your brush may not be working could be because the brush tip is set to a very small size. Also, check for the Opacity and Flow settings of your brush. Lastly, make sure that no part of your design is currently selected with a Selection tool.

Here are some detailed steps on how you can check these issues and fix them:

1. Make sure the Brush Tool is selected.

The Brush Tool can be found in the toolbar on the left. Simply click on it to select the Brush Tool.

2. Check your layers.

A list of your layers can be found in the Layers window at the right part of the screen.

Make sure that you have the correct layer selected. Select the layer that you want to apply the Brush Tool with.

Another one is to check if your selected layer is locked. If there’s a lock icon, click on it to unlock the layer.

Now you can see that the lock has been removed!

3. Check the Brush Tool settings.

The Brush Tool settings can be found at the top portion of your screen once the Brush Tool has been selected.

Check your brush. The brush size might be too small so the effect of your brush is barely seen.

Adjust the brush size by dragging the white handle to the right up to your preferred thickness.

Still, in the Brush Tool settings, make sure that the Opacity and Flow are not too low. This will cause its effect to be barely noticeable.

Adjust the Opacity by typing in your preferred percentage or dragging the slider.

Do the same with Flow.

4. Check the Selection tools.

You might have accidentally selected an area using Selection Tools such as Rectangular Marquee Tool, Lasso Tool, and Quick Selection Tool. A small selected area will already affect your Brush Tool.

To undo this action, click on “Select” at the top menu, then select the option “Deselect”.

NOTE: If the “Deselect” option is not available, that means that you don’t have anything selected by the selection tools. You can do this step just to check that nothing is selected by the Selection Tools.

PRO TIP: If you are experiencing issues with your brush tool in Photoshop, there are a few things you can check. First, make sure that the Brush Tool is selected in the Tools palette. Next, check the settings for the brush in the Brushes palette. Finally, make sure that you have a layer selected in the Layers palette. If you still cannot get the brush tool to work, try resetting Photoshop’s preferences.

If you’ve checked all of these things and your brush still isn’t working properly, try resetting your Photoshop preferences. This can often fix strange bugs and glitches.

Conclusion:

There are a few reasons why your brush may not be working in Photoshop. Some of the things that you can check are enumerated above. Make sure that the Brush tool is selected. Check the Layers section and make sure that the right layer is selected and not locked. Another reason your brush may not be working could be because the brush tip is set to a very small size. Also, check for the Opacity and Flow settings of your brush. Lastly, make sure that no part of your design is currently selected with a Selection tool.
