How Do You Create a Halftone in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:05 pm

A halftone is a printing technique that combines dots to create a deliberate screen-like image. This printing technique is often used for illustrations, especially when gradients or shading is desired.

Photoshop has a built-in filter that can quickly generate a halftone image from any source image.

To Create a Halftone in Photoshop:

  1. Open an image in Photoshop. Any image can be used, but illustrations or images with solid colors work best.
  2. Go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone.
PRO TIP: This article provides instructions on how to create a halftone in Photoshop. However, it is important to note that halftones can only be created in Photoshop if you have an image that is already in grayscale mode. If you attempt to create a halftone from an image that is in RGB mode, you will not be able to see any changes made to the image.

    A dialog box will appear.

  3. Set the Max Radius to 4 and the Screen Angle to 45 degrees. The other options can be left at their default values.
  4. Click OK. Your image will now be converted into a halftone.

The steps above outline the basic process for creating a halftone in Photoshop. However, there are many ways to customize the final image.

For example, try experimenting with different values for the Max Radius and Screen Angle options. You can also try different Pixelate filters, such as Mosaic or Pointillize.
