Where Are XMP Files Stored in Photoshop?

XMP files store information about a photograph, or other digital file, in a sidecar file. The XMP data is embedded into the file itself.

If a file is edited, the XMP data is also updated. For example, if the exposure of a photo is increased in Adobe Photoshop, the XMP file will be updated to reflect that change.

XMP files are often used by professional photographers and graphic designers to store metadata about their digital files. This metadata can include things like the date and time the photo was taken, the exposure settings, the camera used, and other information. XMP files make it easy to keep track of this information and share it with others.

PRO TIP: XMP files are stored in the same directory as the PSD or image file that they are associated with. If you move, delete, or rename the PSD or image file, the XMP file will be moved, deleted, or renamed along with it.

XMP files are usually stored in the same directory as the digital file they contain information about. For example, if a photo is stored in the “My Pictures” folder on a Windows computer, its XMP file will likely be stored in that same folder.
