Can You Make a Vector Logo in Photoshop?

If you’re a graphic designer, chances are you’re proficient in Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is a great program for creating bitmap images, but it’s not ideal for creating vector graphics.

Vector graphics are those that can be scaled to any size without losing quality, and they’re typically used for logos and illustrations. So, can you create a vector logo in Photoshop?

The short answer is yes, but it’s not the best tool for the job. Photoshop does have some vector capabilities, but they’re fairly limited.

For example, you can’t create complex shapes or edit individual points like you can in a true vector program like Adobe Illustrator. And while you can scale a vector graphic in Photoshop, it’s not as easy as it is in Illustrator.

So if you need to create a vector logo, your best bet is to use a dedicated vector program like Illustrator. But if you only have Photoshop and you need to create a vector graphic, there are some workarounds that can help.

PRO TIP: No, you cannot make a vector logo in Photoshop. Vector logos are created in vector graphic programs such as Adobe Illustrator, not in Photoshop.

One workaround is to create your logo in Photoshop at the largest size you’ll need it, then save it as a PDF. PDFs can be opened and edited in Illustrator, and they preserve layers and transparency information. So if you need to make further edits to your logo down the road, you can do so in Illustrator.

Another workaround is to use Photoshop’s “Image Trace” feature to convert your bitmap image into a vector graphic. This feature is found in the “Window” menu.

Image Trace does a decent job of converting images into vectors, but it’s not perfect. You may need to clean up the resulting image manually in Illustrator.

So while it’s possible to create vector logos in Photoshop, it’s not the ideal tool for the job. If you need to create a high-quality vector logo, your best bet is to use a dedicated vector program like Illustrator.
