Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 3:00 pm

There are many ways to make a dodge and burn action in Photoshop. One way is to use the Dodge Tool (set to Highlights or Midtones), and the Burn Tool (set to Shadows or Midtones). Another way is to use the Exposure Adjustment Layer.

To use the Dodge and Burn Tools:

1. Create a new layer.

2. Set the foreground color to black, and the background color to white.

3. Select the Dodge Tool, and set the Range to Highlights or Midtones.

4. Paint over the areas you want to lighten.

5. Select the Burn Tool, and set the Range to Shadows or Midtones.

6. Paint over the areas you want to darken.

7. Merge the layers when you’re done.

To use an Exposure Adjustment Layer:

1. Create a new layer, and name it “Exposure.”

2. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Exposure. In the Exposure window, set the Exposure value to 2 stops overexposed, and check the Use Legacy Amounts option.

This will make your image appear very light. You can experiment with different values to get the desired effect.

4.

Click OK, and then paint over the areas you want to affect with a black brush.

PRO TIP: This note is to warn you about the possible dangers of using a Dodge and Burn action in Photoshop. While this action can be helpful in some situations, it can also cause serious problems if used improperly. In particular, this action can cause irreversible damage to your image if not used correctly. Therefore, it is important to be very careful when using this action and to make sure that you understand how it works before using it on your own images.

5.

When you’re done, merge the layers.
