Glyphs are vector shapes that are used to represent characters in a typeface. In order to use them in Photoshop, you need to first install them. Here’s how:
- Download a typeface that includes glyphs from the Internet. Many free fonts are available online.
- Unzip the file. This will result in a folder containing the fonts.
- Open the Fonts folder. This is usually located in the Control Panel.
Note: If you’re using Windows Vista or 7, you’ll need to open the “Appearance” and “Personalization” control panel.
- Then, click on “Fonts”. If you’re using Mac OS X, open the “Applications” folder, then “Font Book”. If you’re using Linux, open the “Font Management” application.
- Click on “Install New Font”.
- Locate the folder containing the fonts. Select all of the font files and click on “OK.”
- The fonts will now be installed and will appear in the list of available fonts.
PRO TIP: If you are not sure how to install Glyphs in Photoshop, it is best to ask someone who does before proceeding. Incorrect installation can cause software problems.
Note: Some fonts come with multiple variations, such as light, bold, or italic. In order to use these variations, you’ll need to install all of the font files that are included in the zip file.
Installing Glyphs in Photoshop CS6 and Earlier
If you’re using an older version of Photoshop, such as CS6 or earlier, you’ll need to follow a different procedure for installing glyphs.
- Open Photoshop and go to “Edit” > “Preferences” > “Type.”
- Click on “Add.”
- Locate the folder containing the fonts that you want to install and select them.
- Click on “Open” once you have selected all of the desired fonts.
- The selected fonts will now appear in your list of available fonts.
- To access them, go to “Type” > “Glyphs” to view and insert them into your document.
