Can I Get a Refund on UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 10:27 am

As a freelancer, you’re probably well aware of the many different job platforms available to help you find work – and UpWork is one of the most popular. But what happens if you’re not happy with a job you’ve taken on UpWork? Can you get a refund?

The short answer is: it depends.

If you’ve been unjustly treated by a client or have otherwise been the victim of fraud, then you may be able to get a refund from UpWork. However, if you simply change your mind about a job or are otherwise not satisfied with the work, then you will likely not be able to get a refund.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about asking for a refund on Upwork, be warned that this is not always possible. In some cases, you may be able to get a partial refund, but it is not guaranteed. If you have already started work with a freelancer, it is also unlikely that you will be able to get a refund.

UpWork does have a dispute resolution process that you can go through if you feel that you’ve been wronged by a client, so it’s always worth attempting to resolve the issue through that before requesting a refund. And if you are requesting a refund due to fraud, be sure to have all the documentation and evidence ready to go to support your claim.

If you’re still within the scope of work and simply want to cancel the job, your best bet is to try and negotiate with the client directly. Many clients are understanding and may be willing to cancel the job and release you from your obligations if you explain your situation. However, they are not obligated to do so and it’s ultimately up to them whether or not they want to cancel the job.

So, in short, whether or not you can get a refund on UpWork depends on the situation. If you’ve been wronged by a client or are otherwise entitled to a refund due to fraud, then you may be able to get your money back. However, if you simply change your mind about a job or are otherwise dissatisfied with the work, then it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get a refund.
