Can I host videos on Google Cloud?

Last updated on December 18, 2022 @ 4:49 pm

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is a platform for building, deploying, and managing applications in the cloud. GCP provides a range of services, including compute, storage, networking, and application management.

Video hosting on GCP is possible, but requires some setup. First, you’ll need a Google Cloud Platform account. After that, you need to create a project and add a Google Compute Engine (GCE) instance. You can then create a bucket and upload your videos.

To host videos on GCP, you’ll need a Google Cloud Platform account and a GCE instance.

To create a project and add a GCE instance:

1. Open the Google Cloud Platform console.

2. Click the Projects tab, and then click the + icon.

3. Click New Project.

4. In the Project name field, type a name for your project, and then click Create.

5. In the Location field, type a location for your project, and then click Create.

6. In the Select a template category field, select Compute, and then click Next.

7. In the Select a region field, click the US West (Oregon) region, and then click Next.

8. In the Select a provider field, select Google Compute Engine, and then click Next.

9. In the Select a language field, select Python, and then click Next.

10. In the Select a project type field, select Cloud Platform Project, and then click Next.

11. In the Select a project role field, select a role, and then click Next.

12. In the Select a project owner field, select an owner, and then click Next.

13. In the Read and agree to the Google Cloud Platform terms of service and privacy policy fields, click I agree.

14. In the Add a bucket field, type a bucket name, and then click Next.

15. In the Add an instance field, type a name for your GCE instance, and then click Next.

16. In the Select a zone field, type a zone name, and then click Next.

17. In the Select a instance type field, select a type, and then click Next.

18. In the Select a instance size field, type a size, and then click Next.

19. In the Configure project settings for Compute field, click Next.

20. In the Configure project settings for Storage field, click Next.

21. In the Configure project settings for Networking field, click Next.

22. In the Configure project settings for Resources field, click Next.

23. In the Configure project settings for Environment field, click Next.

24. In the Review and create resources fields, click Create.

25. Review the settings, and then click Create.

26. In the Configure project settings for Network.

PRO TIP: While you are able to host videos on Google cloud, we advise against it. The reason being is that there have been reports of videos being taken down without notice or explanation. Furthermore, if you do choose to host your videos on Google cloud, be sure to have a backup plan in place in case your videos are suddenly removed.
