Can I Recover an Unsaved Photoshop File?

Last updated on November 22, 2022 @ 2:12 pm

It’s happened to the best of us. You’re working away on a project in Photoshop, and suddenly your computer crashes or the power goes out. When you reopen Photoshop, your work is gone and you’re faced with a blank canvas. All of your unsaved work has disappeared into the ether.

But don’t despair! There are a few things you can try to recover your lost file.

First, check your Recent Files. Photoshop automatically saves a list of your most recent projects, so if your file was unsaved, it may still be listed here.

To access your Recent Files, open Photoshop and go to File > Open Recent. If your lost file is listed here, simply click on it to open it up and pick up where you left off.

If your file isn’t listed under Recent Files, try opening up App Data. This is a hidden folder on Windows that contains a variety of data about the programs on your computer. To access App Data, open up File Explorer and enter %AppData% into the address bar.

This will take you to the App Data folder. From here, go to Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 > AutoRecover. If Photoshop has autosaved your work at any point, it will be stored here.

If you still can’t find your file, don’t give up hope! There are a few other places you can look. Try opening up the Recycle Bin. If you accidentally deleted your Photoshop file, it may still be stored here.

To access the Recycle Bin, simply double-click on its icon on your desktop. If your file is in the Recycle Bin, you can right-click on it and select Restore. This will move the file back to its original location.

Another place to look is in your Temp folder. This folder contains a variety of temporary files that are created when you’re using certain programs. To access the Temp folder on Windows, enter %Temp% into the File Explorer address bar.

Once you’re in the Temp folder, look for a folder called “Adobe Photoshop CC 2019”. Inside this folder should be another folder called “AutoSave”. If Photoshop has autosaved any versions of your lost file, they’ll be stored here.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, if you have lost an unsaved Photoshop file there are a few things you can try to recover it. First check Recent Files, then App Data, then the Recycle Bin and finally the Temp folder. With any luck one of these methods will help you recover your lost work.

PRO TIP: If you have unsaved changes in Photoshop and you close the file, you will be asked if you want to save your changes. If you choose not to save your changes, Photoshop will not save the file and you will lose your unsaved changes.
