Can I Self Host Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 7:35 am

There are a number of reasons you might want to self-host your Squarespace site. Maybe you’re not happy with the Squarespace platform and want to move to something else.

Or perhaps you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford to pay for Squarespace hosting. Whatever the reason, it is possible to self-host your Squarespace site.

Self-hosting Squarespace requires you to first export your site from Squarespace. You can do this by going to Settings > Advanced > Export/Import.

Once you have exported your site, you will need to find a new host for it. This can be any web hosting service that supports static sites, such as Amazon S3, GitHub Pages, or Netlify.

PRO TIP: While it is possible to self-host Squarespace, we do not recommend it. Self-hosting can lead to a number of issues, including decreased performance, limited customer support, and an increased risk of security vulnerabilities.

Once you have chosen a new host, you will need to upload your exported Squarespace site to it. This is typically done by uploading the files to your hosting account via FTP or SFTP.

Once the files are uploaded, you will need to configure your DNS settings to point to your new host. This is done by changing the “A” record for your domain in your DNS settings.

Once your DNS settings have been updated, your Squarespace site should now be accessible at your new host. Keep in mind that if you are using a service like GitHub Pages or Netlify, your site will have a different URL than it did on Squarespace.

So, can you self-host Squarespace? Yes, but it does require some work on your part. If you’re not comfortable with exporting and uploading your site, or modifying DNS settings, then self-hosting may not be the best option for you.
