Can Photoshop Save as AI?

When you hear the word Photoshop, you probably think of images. Images are what Photoshop is known for. But did you know that Photoshop can also save as AI?

Yes, that’s right. You can save your Photoshop project as an AI file.

AI is a vector file format that is used by Adobe Illustrator. Vector files are made up of mathematical curves, rather than pixels like raster files.

PRO TIP: No, Photoshop cannot save as AI. AI is a file format that is only compatible with Adobe Illustrator. If you try to open an AI file in Photoshop, you will receive an error message.

So why would you want to save your Photoshop project as an AI file? There are a few reasons.

  • Vector files can be scaled to any size without losing quality. This is because vector files are not made up of pixels. So no matter how big or small you make them, they will always look sharp and crisp.
  • Vector files can be edited in Adobe Illustrator. If you need to make some changes to your project after saving it as an AI file, you can open it up in Illustrator and make those changes there.

You can’t do that with a raster file.

  • Vector files are smaller in file size. Because vector files are not made up of pixels, they are usually smaller in file size than raster files. This means they take up less space on your hard drive and are easier to send via email or upload to the web.

So now you know that Photoshop can save as AI. Vector files have many advantages over raster files, so if you need to create a project that can be scaled or edited, consider saving it as an AI file.
