As a freelancer, you’re always looking for new opportunities to land interesting projects and grow your business. But what happens when a project goes south?
Can you cancel the contract on UpWork?
The answer is: maybe. It depends on the specific situation and contract terms.
If you’re within the scope of the contract and able to deliver the work, then you probably won’t be able to cancel. But if the project is no longer feasible or you’re unable to complete the work, then you might be able to get out of the contract.
Here are a few scenarios where you might be able to cancel a contract on UpWork:
- The project scope has changed dramatically and you’re no longer able to complete the work
- The client is not responding to your requests for information or feedback
- The client is not paying you according to the agreed-upon terms
- You or the client has breached the contract in some way
- The project has been cancelled by UpWork
If any of these things are happening with your project, your best bet is to reach out to UpWork support and explain the situation. They may be able to help you cancel the contract.
Keep in mind that cancelling a contract will negatively impact your JSS score, so it should only be done as a last resort.
