Can You Add Bleed in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:21 am

Adding bleed to your Photoshop document is a simple process that can make a big difference in the final print quality of your project. Bleed is the term used to describe the printing that extends beyond the edge of the paper.

When bleed is not added, there is a small white border around the edge of the print. This can be undesirable, especially if you are working with a full-color image. Adding bleed ensures that your image extends to the very edge of the paper, giving your print a professional appearance.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with the term “bleed,” it refers to printing that extends to the edge of a sheet of paper. In Photoshop, you can add bleed by increasing the canvas size and moving your image into the new area.

However, be aware that if you do not have enough bleed, your image may be cut off when the document is printed. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you have at least 0.125 inches (3 mm) of bleed on all sides of your document.

To add bleed in Photoshop, simply open your document and increase the canvas size. The amount of bleed you add will depend on your printer’s requirements, but a good rule of thumb is to add 0.125 inches on each side. Once you have increased the canvas size, make sure to adjust your image so that it fills the entire space. You can do this by selecting the “Image Size” option from the “File” menu.

In the Image Size dialogue box, make sure that the “Constrain Proportions” and “Resample Image” options are both checked. Then, enter your new values for width and height. Click “OK” to resize your image.

Now that you have added bleed to your document, you are ready to print! Just be sure to send your file to a printer that supports bleed printing. Otherwise, you may end up with unwanted white borders around your image.
