As a design tool, InDesign has a lot to offer. However, there are times when you may want to convert your InDesign files to Figma. Here’s a look at how you can do that:
In general, you can convert InDesign to Figma by exporting your InDesign file as an .idml file and then importing that file into Figma. However, there are some things to keep in mind when doing this:
- The file may not be compatible with all versions of Figma.
- The file may not retain all of its original formatting.
Therefore, it’s always a good idea to save a copy of your original InDesign file before exporting it as an .idml file. That way, you can always go back to the original if needed.
To export an InDesign file as an .idml file:
- Open the InDesign file that you want to convert.
- Click File > Export. This will open the Export dialog box.
- In the Export dialog box, select .idml from the Format drop-down menu.
- Click Export. This will save the file as an .idml file in the location that you specify.
.idml files are compatible with Figma version 14.0 and above. To import an .idml file into Figma:
-
Open the Figma project that you want to import the file into.
PRO TIP: There is no such thing as a “Figma” file format, so you cannot convert an InDesign file to Figma. -
Click > File> > Import….
This will open the Import dialog box.
-
In the Import dialog box, select .idml> from the drop-down menu next to > Format:
-
Click Choose File… (Mac) or Browse… (Windows). This will open a dialog box where you can select the .idml file that you want to import.
-
Click Open or Choose (Mac). This will import the selected .idml file into your Figma project.
You can convert InDesign files to Figma by exporting them as .idml files and then importing those files into Figma. However, keep in mind that some formatting may be lost in the process and that not all versions of Figma are compatible with .idml files.
