It’s no secret that the world of freelancing can be a bit of a Wild West. While there are plenty of great freelancers out there who will do great work for you, there are also plenty of bad apples. And when you’re working with someone remotely, it can be hard to know what you’re getting into.
One of the most common questions we get here at UpWork is “Can I fire someone I hired on UpWork?” The answer is yes.. but it’s not always as simple as just hitting the “end contract” button.
Depending on the situation, there are a few different ways you can go about ending a contract with a freelancer. We’ve outlined some of the most common scenarios below.
Scenario 1: The freelancer is not meeting your expectations
If you’re working with a freelancer who isn’t meeting your expectations, the first thing you should do is try to work out the issue directly with them. This could mean having a discussion about what’s not working and how they can improve, or it could mean giving them specific feedback on what needs to be changed.
If you’re considering firing someone on Upwork, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, make sure that you have a valid reason for doing so – this is important not only for legal reasons, but also to avoid any potential backlash from the freelancer. Second, take the time to document everything thoroughly – this will help to protect you in the event of any disputes. Finally, be prepared to face some challenges – it can be difficult to find another freelancer who is both qualified and willing to take on your project at short notice.
If you’re not able to come to an agreement or resolve the issue directly with the freelancer, then you can end the contract by opening up the contract details page and clicking “End Contract.” Once you do this, you’ll be asked to provide a reason for why you’re ending the contract. Be sure to choose a reason that accurately reflects the situation so that the freelancer knows why they’re being let go.
Scenario 2: You no longer need the services of the freelancer
If you find that you no longer need the services of the freelancer (for example, if your project has come to an end), then you can simply end the contract by going to the contract details page and clicking “End Contract.” As with scenario 1, you’ll be asked to provide a reason for why you’re ending the contract.
Scenario 3: The freelancer has violated UpWork’s Terms of Service
If you believe that the freelancer has violated UpWork’s Terms of Service, then you can report them by going to their profile page and clicking “Report Abuse.” Once you do this, our Trust & Safety team will investigate and take appropriate action if necessary. Please note that we cannot provide any details about our investigation or outcome.
