Can You Make GIFs in Figma?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 8:22 pm

GIFs have been around for a while now, and there’s no denying their popularity. With the rise of platforms like Giphy and Tenor, it’s easier than ever to find the perfect GIF for any situation.

But what about creating your own GIFs? Can you make GIFs in Figma?

The short answer is yes, you can make GIFs in Figma. However, the process is a bit more complicated than simply exporting an image as a GIF.

In order to create a GIF in Figma, you’ll need to use the Animation tool. This tool allows you to create frame-by-frame animations within Figma, which can then be exported as a GIF.

PRO TIP: While Figma does have some capabilities for creating GIFs, it is not a dedicated GIF-making tool. As such, there are some limitations to what you can do with Figma and GIFs. For example, you cannot create animated GIFs with Figma.

To get started, create a new file or open an existing one. Then, select the layer that you want to animate and click on the “Create frame animation” button in the toolbar. This will create a new keyframe for that layer on the current frame.

You can then move to other frames and make changes to that layer. For example, you could move an object on frame 1, change its color on frame 2, and so on. Once you’re happy with your animation, you can export it as a GIF by going to File > Export > Export As.. and selecting “Animated GIF” from the drop-down menu.

So there you have it – you can definitely make GIFs in Figma!
