Can You Use a Pseudonym on UpWork?

Pseudonyms, also known as pen names, are commonly used by writers and artists. A pseudonym is a name that is different from the writer’s or artist’s real name. Pseudonyms are used for a variety of reasons.

Some writers use them to keep their personal and professional lives separate. Others use them to write in different genres or to appeal to different audiences. And some writers simply prefer to use a pseudonym because they like the sound of it better than their real name!

So, can you use a pseudonym on UpWork? The short answer is yes, you can!

In fact, many freelancers do use pseudonyms on UpWork (myself included). However, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you’re thinking of using a pseudonym on UpWork:

1. Your pseudonym should be professional. This might seem like an obvious point, but it’s worth mentioning because it’s so important!

Your pseudonym is the name that potential clients will see when they view your profile, so you want to make sure it sounds like a name a professional would use. Avoid cutesy nicknames or anything that might make you seem unprofessional.

2. Your pseudonym should be easy to pronounce and spell. Again, this might seem like an obvious point, but it’s worth mentioning because it can be so important!

If your pseudonym is difficult to pronounce or spell, potential clients might be turned off by it or have difficulty finding you when they search for your name on UpWork. When choosing a pseudonym, make sure it’s something that can easily be pronounced and spelled by anyone.

3. You should still use your real name on your profile. While you can use a pseudonym as your “display name” on UpWork, you should still include your real name (first and last) in the “Name” field of your profile. This is important because clients will often search for freelancers by their real names, so you want to make sure they can still find you even if they don’t know your pseudonym.

4. You may need to provide ID that matches your pseudonym. When you sign up for UpWork, you’re required to provide some form of government-issued ID (e.g., passport, driver’s license).

If you’re using a pseudonym, you’ll need to provide ID that matches the name you’re using on UpWork. So, for example, if yourUpWork name is “John Smith” but your ID says “Jane Doe,” you’ll need to provide additional documentation (e., utility bill) showing that “John Smith” and “Jane Doe” are the same person.
