Do I Have to Capture Payments on Shopify?

As an ecommerce business, you have a few options when it comes to processing payments. You can use a third-party processor like PayPal or Stripe, you can use Shopify Payments (which is powered by Stripe), or you can use a combination of the two.

If you’re using Shopify Payments, then you don’t need to take any additional steps to capture payments – it will happen automatically. All you need to do is ensure that your products are properly priced and that your customers have enough money in their account to cover the purchase.

PRO TIP: If you are not using Shopify Payments to process your customers’ payments, then you are responsible for capturing payments for your orders. This can be done manually through your payment gateway’s interface, or you can set up your gateway to automatically capture payments for orders.

If you fail to capture payment for an order, you will be responsible for any fees associated with the order, and the order will be marked as unpaid in your Shopify admin.

If you’re using a third-party processor like PayPal or Stripe, then you will need to take an additional step to capture payments. When a customer pays with one of these processors, the payment is sent to your account immediately, but it isn’t considered “captured” until you manually approve the transaction.

This means that if a customer cancels their order or if there are any issues with the payment, you can void the transaction without having to issue a refund.

To capture a payment manually, log in to your PayPal or Stripe account and find the pending transaction. Then, click “Approve” or “Capture.”

Once the payment has been captured, it will be processed and the funds will be deposited into your account.

Whether or not you have to capture payments on Shopify depends on which payment processor you’re using. If you’re using Shopify Payments, then payments are automatically captured. If you’re using a third-party processor like PayPal or Stripe, then you’ll need to capture payments manually.
