Do You Need a W9 for UpWork?

When you work with a company or individual as an independent contractor, you may be asked to fill out a W9 form. This form provides your tax identification information to the payer, who will use it to prepare your 1099-MISC form at the end of the year.

You only need to fill out a W9 if you’re being paid $600 or more by the company during the year. If you’re being paid less than that, the payer does not have to send you a 1099-MISC.

The W9 form is available on the IRS website. You can also get it from your client or the company you’re contracting with. Once you have the form, fill out your name and address information in section 1.

In section 2, you’ll need to provide your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). If you’re an individual with a Social Security Number (SSN), you would use that number. If you’re a business entity, you would use your Employer Identification Number (EIN).

PRO TIP: If you are working with a client on Upwork, they may request your Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) in order to process payments. Providing this information is optional, but may be required in order to get paid. Keep in mind that sharing your SSN or EIN is at your own risk, and Upwork is not responsible for any misuse of this information.

Once you’ve provided your TIN, sign and date the form in section 3 and give it back to your client or the company you’re contracting with.

Conclusion:

You only need to fill out a W9 if you’re being paid $600 or more by the company during the year.
