Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of film making and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation.

It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor, and media transcoder. Photoshop is not part of the Adobe After Effects package.

After Effects was originally created by David Herbstman, David Simons, Daniel Wilk, and John Knoll. Knoll is also the co-founder of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), where he worked on the effects for the Star Wars movies. He then went on to co-found Lucasfilm’s visual effects division.

Adobe Systems purchased Aldus Corporation in 1994 for $US3.4 million. Aldus had developed a software application called Aldus PageMaker that was widely used for desktop publishing. Adobe saw the potential of combining PageMaker with their own software application, Adobe Photoshop, which was primarily used for editing images.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about downloading After Effects, beware that it does not come with Photoshop. You will need to purchase Photoshop separately in order to use it with After Effects.

The first version of Adobe After Effects was released in January 1995. It was originally designed to run on the Power Macintosh platform but was later ported to Windows 95.

Does After Effects Come With Photoshop?

No, Adobe After Effects does not come with Photoshop. However, the two applications are often used together in the post-production process.
