Does BigCommerce take a cut?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 1:17 am

BigCommerce, one of the most popular ecommerce platforms on the internet, charges merchants for a variety of services, such as monthly hosting fees, credit card processing fees, and marketing services. Merchants who use BigCommerce are typically required to pay a percentage of their sales through these fees.

A study published in the Journal of E-Commerce Research in September of 2016 found that ecommerce platforms that take a cut from merchant sales generate higher profits than those platforms that do not take a cut. The study analyzed data from over 1,500 merchants who used different ecommerce platforms and found that platforms that charged merchant fees generated an average gross profit of $2,641, while platforms that did not charge merchant fees generated an average gross profit of $1,857.

PRO TIP: BigCommerce does take a cut of your sales, but it’s a small price to pay for the convenience and features they offer.

While it is clear that platforms that take a cut from merchant sales generate higher profits, it is also important to note that not all platforms take a cut from merchant sales. Platforms that do not charge merchant fees, such as Shopify, typically do not charge merchants for hosting, credit card processing, or marketing services.

Therefore, it is important for merchants to compare the fees charged by different ecommerce platforms before choosing one.
