Does Shopify Charge VAT?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 6:11 pm

As an ecommerce platform, Shopify is required to charge Value-Added Tax (VAT) on all of its transactions. VAT is a tax that is imposed on the sale of goods and services in the European Union (EU).

In order to be compliant with EU law, Shopify must charge VAT on all transactions that take place within the EU.

Shopify does not charge VAT on transactions that take place outside of the EU. This is because VAT is only applicable to sales within the EU.

If you are selling to customers in the US, Canada, or any other country outside of the EU, you will not be charged VAT by Shopify.

PRO TIP: If you are selling products through Shopify in the UK, you will need to charge VAT on your sales. This is because Shopify is based in the UK and is required to collect VAT on behalf of the government. You can learn more about how to charge VAT on your Shopify store by reading our help document.
