Does Shopify Have Cyber Security?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:48 pm

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to launch their own online snowboarding store. Lütke used the open source web application framework Ruby on Rails to build the initial platform. Shopify launched its platform in June 2006.

In 2010, Shopify started its own payment gateway called “Shopify Payments” to replace PayPal as the default payment method on its platform.

PRO TIP: Shopify is a platform for businesses of all sizes to create an online store. While it does have some built-in security features, it is not a cyber security solution. If you are looking to protect your online store from cyber attacks, you will need to use a third-party cyber security solution.

In 2016, Shopify acquired Boltmade, a Canadian software development company. The acquisition gave Shopify “access to Boltmade’s team of designers and developers as well as its technology.”

Shopify has been criticized for not having Cyber Security features. However, Shopify has taken steps to improve its Cyber Security features.

In 2019, Shopify launched a new Cyber Security program called “Project Zero”. Project Zero is a “bug bounty” program that offers rewards to researchers who find and report security vulnerabilities in Shopify’s platform.
