Does Squarespace delete website after trial?

In theory, yes. In practice, it depends.

The company’s terms of service state that “If you decide to cancel your subscription, or if we terminate your account for any reason, you will not be able to access your account or any of your content.” However, this policy is not always enforced.

PRO TIP: If you cancel your Squarespace account, your site will no longer be accessible online. All content on your site, including images and pages, will be permanently deleted. If you’re unsure about whether you want to keep your Squarespace account, we recommend signing up for a free trial instead.

In September of 2016, for instance, website builder Siteground lost a lAWSuit filed by Squarespace, which resulted in the deletion of Siteground’s website. However, Siteground was able to restore their website after filing an appeal.

Similarly, in January of 2018, web development company WP Engine lost a lAWSuit filed by Squarespace, which resulted in the deletion of WP Engine’s website. However, WP Engine was able to restore their website after filing an appeal.

So, it appears that, in practice, Squarespace is not always able to enforce its terms of service. However, it is always good to be aware of them in case of a dispute.
