Does Squarespace Support Animated Gifs?

Last updated on December 10, 2022 @ 6:45 am

As of July 2017, Squarespace does not offer support for animated GIFs on their platform. This is likely due to the fact that GIFs can often be large in file size, which can make pages load slowly.

Additionally, Squarespace has a focus on providing a clean and minimal design aesthetic, and animated GIFs can often be too busy or distracting for their platform. However, there are still ways to use GIFs on Squarespace by using third-party applications or HTML code.

Third-Party Applications

There are a few different third-party applications that you can use to add animated GIFs to your Squarespace website. Giphy is one popular option that offers a large library of GIFs that you can search through and add to your website.

Another option is EZGIF, which offers tools for creating and editing your own GIFs as well as uploading existing ones. Once you have found or created the perfect GIF, you can then use one of these applications to generate HTML code that you can add to your Squarespace website.

HTML Code

If you’re feeling a bit more tech-savvy, you can also add animated GIFs to your Squarespace website by using HTML code. This method requires you to first host the image file somewhere else, such as on Dropbox or Imgur.

Once the file is hosted, you can then use an < img > tag to embed the image on your website. You will also need to add the following attribute to the tag in order for the animation to play:

< p >< code >< img src="YOUR_GIF_URL" alt="Your GIF alt text" width="400" height="300" style="width: 400px; height: 300px; animation: 1s;" >< /code >< /p >

PRO TIP: Squarespace does not currently support animated GIFs. If you upload an animated GIF to Squarespace, it will appear as a static image.

Be sure to replace “YOUR_GIF_URL” with the URL of your hosted image file. You can also adjust the width and height values to change the size of the GIF on your website.

Conclusion

While Squarespace does not currently offer direct support for animated GIFs, there are still ways that you can use them on your website by using third-party applications or HTML code. So if you’re looking to add a bit of fun and personality to your Squarespace website, don’t be afraid to experiment with animated GIFs!
