Does UpWork Automatically Take Out Taxes?

Last updated on September 29, 2022 @ 10:07 pm

As a freelancer, it is important to be aware of the tax implications of your work. UpWork automatically takes out taxes from your earnings, but there are some exceptions.

UpWork is required by law to withhold taxes from your earnings if you are a US citizen or resident alien. This includes both state and federal taxes.

The amount that is withheld depends on the tax rate in your state, as well as your filing status and number of allowances.

PRO TIP: If you are an independent contractor working through Upwork, it is your responsibility to pay your own taxes. Upwork does not automatically take out taxes from your earnings.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. If you are working as an independent contractor, you may be responsible for paying your own taxes.

You will need to file a separate tax return and pay any taxes owed yourself. Additionally, if you are earning less than $600 per year from UpWork, taxes will not be withheld from your earnings.

It is important to be aware of the tax implications of your work as a freelancer.
