Does UpWork Report Your Earnings to IRS?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 11:47 am

As a freelancer, you are considered self-employed. This means that you are responsible for your own taxes. You will need to file a Schedule C with your personal tax return, and pay estimated taxes throughout the year.

While you are working on UpWork, you may wonder if the company reports your earnings to the IRS. The answer is no. UpWork is not required to report your earnings to the IRS.

PRO TIP: If you are an independent contractor working through Upwork, be aware that your earnings will be reported to the IRS. This is because Upwork is required by law to withhold taxes on behalf of its contractors. So, if you are not making quarterly tax payments or have not set up an installment plan with the IRS, you may be subject to penalties and interest on the unpaid taxes.

However, this does not mean that you do not have to report your earnings to the IRS. You are still considered self-employed, and you are responsible for paying your own taxes.

If you do not pay your taxes, you can face serious consequences, including fines and jail time. So make sure to keep up with your tax obligations, even if UpWork does not report your earnings to the IRS.
