How Are Figma Files Saved?

If you’re a Figma user, you’re probably wondering how your Figma files are saved. Here’s a quick rundown of how Figma saves your work:

Figma files are saved locally on your computer as you work on them. Once you hit the “Save” button in the top-right corner of the Figma interface, your changes are saved as a .fig file on your computer.

Figma also saves a copy of your file in the cloud, so you can access it from anywhere and share it with others. When you share a file, Figma creates a unique URL for that file. Anyone with the URL can view or edit the file, depending on the permissions you’ve set.

PRO TIP: Figma files are saved as JSON files. JSON files can be read by any text editor, but they are not meant to be edited by hand. If you try to edit a Figma file by hand, you will probably break it and your changes will be lost when you next save the file.

Figma uses Amazon S3 to store files in the cloud. Your files are stored securely and backed up regularly. If you ever need to restore a previous version of your file, Figma keeps up to 30 days of history for free.

In short, Figma files are saved both locally on your computer and in the cloud. Hitting the “save” button will save changes as a .fig file to your computer while also saving a copy in Amazon S3 (cloud storage). You can share these files by creating unique URLs that allow others to view or edit them–depending on permissions set by the owner.
