Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. Photoshop was created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll. Since then, it has become the de facto industry standard in raster graphics editing, to the point that Photoshop has become a generic trademark leading to its use as a verb such as “to Photoshop an image”, “photoshopping” and “Photoshop contest”, though Adobe discourages such use.

Photoshop can edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and supports masks, alpha compositing, and several color models including RGB, CMYK, CIELAB, spot color, and duotone. Photoshop uses its own PSD and PSB file formats to support these features.

In addition to raster graphics, Photoshop has limited abilities to edit or render text, vector graphics (especially through clipping path), 3D graphics and video. Its feature set can be expanded by plug-ins developed both by Adobe and by third-parties.

Adobe Photoshop is a commercial program with a free trial available from Adobe’s website. The trial version of Photoshop will work for 30 days before requiring payment. After the 30 days have passed, you will need to purchase a subscription or single-app license in order to continue using the program.

If you’re interested in using Photoshop but don’t want to commit to buying the program outright, you can sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud. Creative Cloud is a subscription service that gives you access to all of Adobe’s creative apps, including Photoshop.

With Creative Cloud, you can choose between two different subscription plans:
The Photography plan, which includes Lightroom and costs $9.99/month; or
The All Apps plan, which gives you access to the entire Creative Suite of apps and costs $49.99/month. You can also sign up for a free trial of Creative Cloud before committing to a plan.
