How Did Shopify Get So Big?

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Lütke used the web platform Ruby on Rails to build Snowdevil’s online store, and then launched Shopify in 2006 to offer the same technology to other merchants. Shopify launched its public offering in May 2015 on the New York Stock Exchange and became a Unicorn startup in August 2015 with a valuation of over $1 billion USD.

Shopify has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2004. In 2013, it was reported that Shopify had around 60,000 active stores on their platform, which generated $1.6 billion USD in sales that year.

By 2015, this number had grown to 175,000 active stores, which generated $3.8 billion USD in sales. And as of 2016, Shopify is now home to over 377,500 active stores, which are on track to generate $9 billion USD in sales this year!
