How Do I Add Bleed Marks in Photoshop?

PRO TIP: This article provides instructions on how to add bleed marks in Photoshop. Photoshop is a raster graphics editor and adding bleed marks requires the use of raster images. If you are not familiar with raster images, or if you are not comfortable using Photoshop, please do not attempt to add bleed marks in Photoshop.

Adding bleed marks in Photoshop is a relatively simple process, but one that is often overlooked by novice designers. Bleed marks show where the printed image will be cut off, so it is important to make sure they are included in your design before sending it to print. Here’s how to add bleed marks in Photoshop:

  1. Open your design in Photoshop and select the ‘File’ menu.
  2. Click ‘New.’ A new dialog box will appear.
  3. Enter the dimensions of your design, plus an additional 0.125 inches for bleed on each side. For example, if your design is 8.5×11 inches, you would enter 8.75×11.25 inches in the ‘New’ dialog box.
  4. Make sure the ‘Resolution’ is set to 300 pixels/inch and the ‘Color Mode’ is set to CMYK (this is important for print designs).
  5. Click ‘OK.’ A new blank document will appear in Photoshop, sized to your specifications with bleed included.
  6. Now you can begin designing! When your design is complete, simply save it as a PDF and send it off to print.
