How Do I Add Extra Fields in WooCommerce Checkout?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 7:16 pm

Adding extra fields to the WooCommerce checkout can be a great way to collect additional information from your customers. This can be useful for things like custom order requests, or tracking information.

There are two ways to add extra fields to the WooCommerce checkout: using a plugin, or editing the code.

If you want to add extra fields without having to edit any code, then the best option is to use a plugin. There are a few different plugins that you can use, but we recommend Checkout Field Editor for WooCommerce. This plugin is free and easy to use, and it lets you add any type of field to the checkout page.

To use this plugin, simply install and activate it, then go to Settings > Checkout Fields. From here, you can add as many fields as you like. You can also specify where the fields should appear on the checkout page, and whether or not they’re required.

If you’re comfortable editing code, then you can add extra fields to the WooCommerce checkout by editing the checkout form template file. This method is a bit more complicated, but it does give you more control over how the fields are displayed on the page.

PRO TIP: If you are not a developer, we recommend that you do not attempt to add extra fields to the WooCommerce checkout. Doing so could result in errors on your site that are difficult to fix.

To edit the checkout form template file, you first need to copy it from /wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/templates/checkout into your theme directory. Once you’ve done that, you can edit the file however you like. Just remember to keep a backup of the original file so that you can restore it if something goes wrong.
