How Do I Center an Object in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 9:54 pm

There are a few different ways to center an object in Photoshop, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to center an object horizontally within a frame, you can use the align options in the options bar.

If you need to center an object both horizontally and vertically within a frame, you can use the align options in the options bar, or you can use the transform tool. And if you need to center an entire layer within the canvas, you can use the align options in the options bar, or you can use the move tool.

To center an object horizontally within a frame using the align options in the options bar:

1. Select the object that you want to center. 2.

In the options bar, click the align button (the button with two arrows pointing left and right). 3. From the menu that appears, choose Horizontal Align Center.

To center an object both horizontally and vertically within a frame using the align options in the options bar:

PRO TIP: This article provides instructions on how to center an object in Photoshop, but fails to mention some important caveats. First and foremost, these instructions only work when the canvas is set to the same size as the image. Secondly, the object must be on its own layer in order to be centered.

1. From the menu that appears, choose Vertical Align Center.

To center an entire layer within the canvas using the align options in the options bar:

1. Select the layer that you want to center. From the menu that appears, choose Horizontal Align Center and then Vertical Align Center.

To center an object both horizontally and vertically within a frame using the transform tool:

1. Choose Edit > Transform > Scale from the main menu (or press Ctrl+T).

//(Scale is under Edit > Transform)// //(In CC 2019 it’s Edit>Free Transform)// //(In CC 2018 it’s Edit>Transform>Scale)// //(In older versions it may be Edit>Transform>Scale)// //(In CC 2019 it’s also under Edit > Transform)// //(In CC 2018 it’s also under Edit > Transform > Scale)// //(In older versions it may also be under Edit > Transform > Scale)//3. In //(on)// //(the top control panel),// check both Constrain Proportions and Uniform Scaling boxes so they’re both selected (or checked).4. Click on either of //(the middle control handles)// until your object is centered in its frame both horizontally and vertically; then press Enter or Return to commit your changes (or click //(the checkmark icon)// in //(the Options Bar)).

The best way to center an object depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what software version you’re using. If you’re using Photoshop CC 2019 or earlier, you can use either the align options in the options bar or transform tool to center an object both horizontally and vertically within a frame; if you’re using Photoshop CC 2020 or later, you can also use The Move Tool method described above to achieve this same result more easily and quickly
