How Do I Create a Smoke Effect in Photoshop Action?

Last updated on January 25, 2023 @ 6:07 pm

In this tutorial, we’re going to learn how to create a smoke effect in Photoshop Action. We’ll be using some basic Photoshop tools and a few smoke brushes to create this effect. Let’s get started!

First, we need to create a new document in Photoshop. Go to File > New and create a new document with the following settings:

  • Width: 1200 pixels
  • Height: 1200 pixels
  • Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
  • Color Mode: RGB color
  • Background Contents: White

Now that we have our new document set up, we can start adding some smoke to it. First, let’s create a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer. We’ll call this layer “Smoke 1”.

Next, we need to select a smoke brush. There are many different smoke brushes available for download online.

For this tutorial, we’ll be using the 16 High Resolution Smoke Brushes. Once you’ve downloaded and extracted the brushes, go ahead and load them into Photoshop by going to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager. In the Preset Manager dialog box, select “Brushes” from the drop-down menu and click on the “Load” button.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that the ‘How Do I Create a Smoke Effect in Photoshop Action?’ may not be suitable for all users. Some of the steps involved in creating the smoke effect may be too difficult for some users, resulting in frustration or even giving up on the action altogether. It is recommended that only experienced users attempt this action.

In the Open dialog box that appears, navigate to the location of the extracted 16 High Resolution Smoke Brushes folder and select all of the .abr files within it. Then click on the “Open” button.

This will load all of the smoke brushes into Photoshop.
