Photoshop is a widely used program for crafting layouts, graphics, logos, and photos. As with any program, Photoshop generates temporary files while you work.
These files help the program run more smoothly by caching data and eliminating the need to re-render information that has not changed. While Photoshop can delete these temp files automatically, you may want to delete them manually from time to time to clear up space on your computer.
Here are instructions on how to delete Photoshop temp files:
- Open the Adobe Photoshop application.
- Click on Edit at the top of the screen, then hover over Preferences. A drop-down menu will appear. Select Performance from this menu.
-
On the Performance tab, you will see a section labeled “Temporary Files.
- Click on the “Empty Disk Cache” button.
- Click on “Yes”. The disk cache will be emptied and all of the temporary files associated with your recent Photoshop sessions will be deleted.
A warning message will appear asking if you are sure you want to delete all of the contents of the disk cache. This disk cache can range in size from a few megabytes to several gigabytes, depending on how often you use Photoshop and the size of the projects you work on.
If you want to prevent Photoshop from creating these temporary files in the first place, you can change the location of the disk cache. This is helpful if you have multiple hard drives and want to keep your working files separate from your system files.
To change the location of the disk cache, follow these steps:
- Open the Adobe Photoshop application.
- Click on “Edit”, then hover over “Preferences”. A drop down menu will appear. Select “Performance” from this menu.
- On the Performance tab, look for the section labeled “Cache Folder.”
- the “Choose Folder” button. A new window will pop up allowing you to select a new location for your disk cache folder.
- Select the new location for your disk cache and click on “OK.” (Make sure that this new location has enough free space to accommodate your needs – at least 10GB is recommended.
- Your preference changes will be automatically saved and applied.
- Now when you use Adobe Photoshop, any temporary files that are generated will be stored in this new location.
Deleting temp files is a simple process that only takes a few moments. By doing this regularly, you can help keep your computer running smoothly and free up space for other programs and files.
