How Do I Disconnect My Domain From Squarespace?

Last updated on December 27, 2022 @ 5:46 pm

If you’re no longer using Squarespace, you can disconnect your domain from your site. This process is also known as transferring your domain away from Squarespace. You can disconnect your domain at any time, but we recommend doing this after you’ve transferred your site to another platform.

When you disconnect your domain, it will remain registered with Squarespace. However, it will no longer be associated with your site, and you’ll need to pay Squarespace separately for any domains you want to keep registered. If you have more than one domain associated with your site, you can choose to keep some domains and transfer others away.

If you’re ready to disconnect your domain, follow these steps:

    1. Log in to your site’s Home Menu.

    2. Click Settings, and then click Domains.

    3. Click the domain that you want to transfer away from Squarespace.

    4. In the Domain Settings panel, click Transfer Domain Away from Squarespace. You’ll see a warning message about what this means for your domain and email accounts.

    5. If you have any email accounts associated with this domain, we recommend transferring them to another platform before proceeding. For more information, visit Can I use email with Squarespace?.

    6. When you’re ready to proceed, click Transfer Domain Away again. A message appears confirming that the process has begun. Depending on your registrar, the transfer can take up to 72 hours to complete.

If you have any email accounts associated with this domain, we recommend transferring them to another platform before proceeding.

PRO TIP: If you are considering disconnecting your domain from Squarespace, please be aware that this will permanently delete your website and all of its content. You will not be able to retrieve any of this information once it is gone. Proceed with caution and only do this if you are absolutely sure that you want to delete your entire website.
