How Do I Enable SSL on Squarespace?

Last updated on December 10, 2022 @ 7:02 am

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a protocol that enables communication between server and client in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery. When you enable SSL on your Squarespace site, we’ll automatically route traffic to the HTTPS version of your site.

Your site will still be available over HTTP, but visitors will be automatically redirected to HTTPS. In addition, all resources on your site will be loaded securely over HTTPS.

To enable SSL on your Squarespace site:

  • Log into your Squarespace account and navigate to the Settings panel.
  • Click Security.
  • Check the box next to Enable SSL.
  • Click Save.

Note:

If you’re using a custom domain, you’ll need to verify your domain for SSL. Also, visitors will only be able to access your site over HTTPS if they’ve visited your site before.

Once they’ve been to your HTTPS site, their browser will remember and automatically route them there in the future.

PRO TIP: Squarespace does not offer SSL certificates for custom domains. This means that any data transmitted between your site and its visitors will not be encrypted. This could put your site and its visitors at risk of data theft or interception. If you are concerned about the security of your site, we recommend that you do not enable SSL.
