Illustrator is a vector-based drawing application that allows users to create sophisticated illustrations and graphics. One of the most common tasks in Illustrator is filling a layer with color.

There are a variety of methods you can use to achieve this, but the most common is to use the Color Palette.

To access the Color Palette, click on the Palette menu item in the Illustrator toolbar and select Color Palette. The Color Palette will appear in the panel on the right side of the Illustrator window.

The Color Palette includes a variety of colors and gradients you can use to fill a layer with color. To use a color in the Color Palette, select the color from the palette and click on the color swatch to the left of the color name.
