How Do I Forward a Domain on Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 3:37 am

If you have a domain through Squarespace and you want to use it with another service, you can forward your domain. Domain forwarding lets you automatically direct your visitors to another URL.

You might forward your domain if you’re using another platform for your website, or if you want to use your domain for email only. This article covers:

Before you begin

Before you forward your domain, keep in mind:

  • Domain forwarding only works with domains purchased through Squarespace.
  • You can only forward one domain per site.
  • We recommend keeping your site live on Squarespace while you’re building your new site. That way, visitors will still be able to find your content.

Step 1: Set up forwarding in the Domains panel

Open the Domains panel.

On the Home Menu, click Settings, and then click Domains.

Click the domain name you want to forward.

Click Domain Settings, and then scroll down to Domain Forwarding.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about forwarding your Squarespace domain, be aware that there are some potential risks involved. First and foremost, when you forward a domain, all of the DNS records for that domain are pointing to the new destination. This means that if there are any problems with the new destination (e.g., the site is down), your domain will be affected as well. Additionally, if you are not careful when setting up the forwarding, it is possible to create a redirect loop, which can result in your site being inaccessible. Finally, depending on how your site is currently set up, forwarding your domain may break certain functionality (e.g., email). As such, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of forwarding your domain before taking action.

In the Forwarding URL field, enter the URL where you want your domain to redirect.

Click Save. If prompted, log into your registrar account and update your DNS records. Then click I’ve Updated My DNS Records. For more help, visit Using Squarespace with an External Domain.

Step 2: Remove your site’s content

If you have a live site on Squarespace, we recommend keeping it live while you’re building your new site. If you don’t want visitors to see your Squarespace site anymore, you can unpublish it:

  • Open the Site Manager.
  • Click Unpublish Site.

Once you unpublish your site, we’ll stop hosting it and it will no longer appear online.
