So you want to be a driving instructor (ADI)? Great, it’s a fulfilling and rewarding job helping people learn a new skill. But how do you go about becoming an ADI?

The first step is to make sure you meet the minimum requirements. You must:

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

Be over 21 years old

Have had a full driving licence for at least 3 years

Not have any endorsements or disqualifications on your licence

If you meet these requirements then you can apply for an ADI qualification. This involves passing three exams; a theory test, a practical test and a teaching ability test.

The theory test covers the Highway Code and traffic law. You need to score at least 85% to pass. The practical test assesses your driving ability and is the same as the test you took to get your full licence.

You need to score at least 75% to pass. The teaching ability test assesses your ability to give lessons and is made up of two parts; a practical demonstration and an interview. You need to pass both parts to become qualified.

Once you have passed all three exams, you will be issued with an ADI badge. This needs to be renewed every four years and to do this you must keep up to date with changes in the law and best practice in teaching. You also need to complete 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) every 4 years.

To sum up, in order to become an ADI, you must:

Be over 21 years old,

Have had a full driving licence for at least 3 years,

Not have any endorsements or disqualifications on your licence.
In addition, you must pass three exams; a theory test, a practical test and a teaching ability test. Finally, once you have passed all three exams, you will be issued with an ADI badge..

PRO TIP: ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) is a feature on Wix that allows users to create a website without having to code or design it themselves. However, ADI is not always accurate and can sometimes create websites that are not usable or aesthetically pleasing. Use ADI at your own risk.
