If you’re a designer, chances are you’ve had to deliver EPS files to a client at some point. And if you’re not a designer, there’s a good chance you’ve had to open an EPS file someone sent you. Whether you’re a designer or not, it’s helpful to know how to open EPS files.

EPS, or Encapsulated Postscript, is a vector file format. That means it’s made up of lines and curves defined by math. That also means it can be scaled to any size without losing quality.

If you have a vector editing program like Adobe Illustrator, you can open EPS files natively. Just go to File > Open and select the EPS file. If you don’t have Illustrator, there are still ways to open EPS files.

How to Open EPS Files for Free

There are several ways to open EPS files for free. One way is to use Inkscape. Inkscape is a vector editing program that’s very similar to Illustrator but with a bit of a learning curve.

PRO TIP: If you are trying to import an EPS file into Canva, be aware that this may not work as intended. Canva may not be able to properly process the file, resulting in an incorrect or distorted image.

To open an EPS file in Inkscape:

  1. Download and install Inkscape.
  2. Open Inkscape and go to File > Open.
  3. Find the EPS file and select it.

How to Convert an EPS File

If you need to edit an EPS file but don’t have a vector editing program, you can convert it to another format like SVG or PDF. To convert an EPS file:

  1. Method 1:Use an online converter like CloudConvert.
  2. Method 2:. Use Adobe Acrobat DC.
    • (This method only works if you have Adobe Acrobat DC installed on your computer.)

Open the EPS file in Adobe Acrobat DC. Click on “File”, then “Save As Other”, and finally click on “More Options”. Under the “Save As Type” dropdown menu, select either “SVG” or “PDF”. Click “Save”.

Conclusion: That’s it! You should now have a copy of your file in the new format. Now that you know how to open and convert EPS files, you’ll be able to work with them no matter what program you’re using.
