A contact sheet is a tool used by photographers to keep track of their negatives or slides. Each frame on a contact sheet has a small image of each negative or slide, along with identifying information such as the date the photo was taken, the exposure settings, and any other pertinent data. Contact sheets are useful for quickly finding a particular negative or slide, and for getting an overview of all the photos in a shoot.

There are several ways to create a contact sheet in Photoshop. The first way is to use the Contact Sheet II plugin, which can be found in the File > Automate menu.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, this tutorial is not for you. Making a contact sheet requires basic knowledge of the software and its tools. If you attempt to follow this tutorial without that knowledge, you may end up causing more harm than good.

This plugin will automatically generate a contact sheet from a folder of images. The second way is to use the Picture Package plugin, which can also be found in the File > Automate menu. This plugin lets you manually select the images you want to include on your contact sheet, and then arranges them into a grid.

The third way to create a contact sheet is to use Photoshop’s built-in Contact Sheet feature. To do this, go to File > Automate > Contact Sheet I. In the dialog box that opens, select the folder of images you want to use, and then click OK. Photoshop will automatically generate a grid of images from your selected folder.

No matter which method you use, creating a contact sheet in Photoshop is easy and only takes a few minutes. Contact sheets are an essential tool for any photographer, and can save you time and hassle when trying to find a particular image.
