How Do I Make a File Downloadable on Squarespace?

Last updated on December 11, 2022 @ 2:13 am

If you have a file, such as a PDF, that you want to make available for download on your Squarespace site, there are a few steps you’ll need to take. First, upload the file to your site’s Assets.

Next, add a link to the file on a page or blog post. Finally, format the link so it opens in a new window.

Uploading the file:

    1. In the Home Menu, click Settings.
    2. In the Website Management section, click Files and Uploads.
    3. Click Add Files.
    4. Select the file you want to upload from your computer.
    5. Click Open.
    6. The file will upload and appear in the File Manager.

Adding the link:

    1. In the Home Menu, click Pages or Blog, depending on where you want to add the link. Hover over the page or post where you want to add the link and click Edit.
    2. In the Content Editor, click Insert and then select Link.
    3. Alternatively, you can press L on your keyboard while in the Content Editor to insert a link quickly.
    4. Click Assets. Select the file you uploaded from the list of assets and click Insert. The name of your file will appear in the Link URL field. If you want, you can also edit the Link Text field before adding the link. Be sure to format the link so it opens in a new window.

Formatting the link to open in a new window:

    1. In Squarespace, open up the page or blog post where your downloadable file is linked.
    2. Click on “Edit” for that page or blog post.
    3. In your content editor, find the linked text for your downloadable file.
PRO TIP: If you are not careful, you can accidentally make a file downloadable on Squarespace. This means that anyone who visits your site can download the file. If you do not want this to happen, be sure to check the file permissions before uploading the file to your site.
