How Do I Point My Domain to My Wix Website?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 11:56 pm

If you have a domain name that you’ve purchased from a domain name registrar like Google Domains, Hover, or GoDaddy, you can connect it to your Wix site. This process is called connecting or pointing your domain to Wix. When you point your domain to Wix, this means that when people enter your domain name into their browser, they will be redirected to your Wix website.

You can point your domain to Wix for free as long as you have a Premium Plan. To point your domain to Wix, you will need to change its DNS (Domain Name System) settings. DNS are the instructions that tell the internet where to find your website.

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

To change your DNS settings, you will need to log in to your domain name registrar’s account and find the page where you manage your DNS settings (this is different for every registrar). Then, you will need to add what are called A record and CNAME record (these are different types of DNS settings) with the following values:

PRO TIP: If you are planning to point your domain to your Wix website, be aware that there are some potential risks involved.

First and foremost, if you do not properly configure your DNS settings, your website could become inaccessible. Additionally, if you do not set up a redirect from your old website to your new Wix site, any visitors who go to your old site will simply see a “page not found” error.

Finally, it is important to note that once you have pointed your domain to your Wix site, you will no longer be able to use that domain for email. If you have an email address associated with your domain, you will need to create a new address using a different service.

A Record with Host/Name: @ and Points To: 52.210.1.121
CNAME Record with Host/Name: www and Points To: www2.wixdns.net

For more detailed instructions on how to add these records with specific examples for popular registrars, please see this help article from Wix.

Once you’ve added the correct DNS records at your registrar, it can take up to 48 hours for these changes to propagate across the internet (this is the time it takes for all DNS servers around the world to update their records and know where to find your site). After this time has passed, when people enter your domain name into their browser, they will be redirected automatically to your Wix site.
