How Do I Point My Domain to Shopify?

Last updated on January 8, 2023 @ 6:20 am

If you have a domain registered with Shopify, you can automatically point it to your shop by enabling DNS settings from your Shopify admin. You can also choose to set up an alternate domain, or point an existing domain to your shop.

If you’ve registered your domain with Shopify, you can enable DNS settings from your Shopify admin to automatically point it to your shop. Follow these steps to enable DNS settings for your domain:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains.
  2. In the Domains page, click the gear icon next to the relevant domain name, then click Enable automatic DNS configuration.

Alternate domains

An alternate domain is a domain that you set up in addition to your primary domain. Alternate domains can be useful if you want to promote a specific campaign or product on its own URL.

For example, if you’re running a holiday promotion on www.example.com/holidaypromo, you can set up an alternate domain for it, such as www.holidaypromo.com. Then, when the promotion is over, you can disable the alternate domain.

PRO TIP: If you are unsure about how to point your domain to Shopify, it is best to contact your domain registrar or Shopify support for help. Incorrectly pointing your domain to Shopify can result in your website not working properly or not being accessible.

Pointing an existing domain to Shopify

If you have a domain that’s registered with another provider, such as GoDaddy or Hover, you can still use it with your shop on Shopify. You need to update your DNS settings for the domain so that it points to Shopify’s servers. Follow these instructions from your registrar to update your DNS settings:
