In Photoshop, you can use the green screen effect to place your image on a green background and then change the background to any other color or image. This effect is commonly used in video and photography to replace the background with a new one.
To put an image on a green screen in Photoshop:
- Open your image in Photoshop.
- Click the Channels tab at the top of the Layers panel.
- Click the Channel drop-down menu and select RGB. This will make sure that all of the colors in your image are selected.
- Click the drop-down menu and select Color Range.
In the Color Range window, click on the green area of your image and drag until all of the green is selected. Then, click OK. - Now that the green is selected, click on the Select drop-down menu again and select Inverse. This will select everything except: for the green.
- With everything else selected, go back to the Layers panel , and click on the Add Layer Mask button it’s second from the bottom

Now you can add any background you want! In this example, we’ll add a gradient. First, make sure that your foreground and background colors are set to their defaults by pressing “D” on your keyboard. Then, go to the “Edit” menu at the top of Photoshop and select “Fill”. If you don’t see “Fill,” go to “Edit” > “Fill Layer…” In the “Fill” window, set the “Use” drop-down menu to “Gradient” and then click “OK”. If you don’t see a gradient option, make sure that you have Photoshop CC 2015 or later. Now, simply drag your gradient tool from one side of your image to the other.
And that’s it! You can now add any background you want to your green screen images in Photoshop.
