How Do I Recover a Photoshop Temp File?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 9:13 pm

If you’re a Adobe Photoshop user, you may be familiar with the “temp” files that the program creates. These files are automatically created and saved by Photoshop in order to help recover your work in the event of a crash.

However, sometimes these temp files can become corrupted or deleted, which can lead to lost work. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t despair! There are a few things you can do to try and recover your lost temp file.

First, check to see if the temp file was simply renamed or moved. Sometimes this can happen if you accidentally hit a key combination that renames or moves the file. To check for this, open up Adobe Photoshop and go to Edit > Preferences > File Handling.

Under the “File Saving Options” section, make sure that the “Keep Photoshop Temporary Files” option is checked. Then click “OK.”

Next, go to your system’s temp folder and see if the file is there. The location of the temp folder will vary depending on your operating system, but it is usually in the C:\ drive. Once you find the temp folder, open it up and see if your lost file is inside.

PRO TIP: If you are experiencing issues with Photoshop, you may be able to recover a temp file. However, this is not a guaranteed solution and should only be attempted if you are comfortable with using basic file recovery tools. Additionally, recovered temp files may not be usable and could cause further issues.

If it is, simply copy it to a safe location and then open it up in Adobe Photoshop. If the file isn’t there, don’t worry! There are a few more things you can try.

Another place to look for lost temp files is in your recycle bin. Sometimes when a file is deleted, it will end up here instead of being permanently erased from your system. To check your recycle bin, simply double-click on the icon and then look through the files inside.

If you find your lost temp file here, right-click on it and select “Restore.” This will put the file back in its original location on your hard drive. Once it’s been restored, you should be able to open it up in Adobe Photoshop without any problems.

If you’ve tried all of these things and still can’t find your lost temp file, don’t give up! There are a few other places you can look, including cloud storage services and backup drives.

However, these are less likely to contain lost temp files since they typically only sync or backup completed work. Nonetheless, it’s worth checking just in case!
