How Do I Recover an Unsaved Photoshop Document?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 11:22 am

It happens to the best of us: you’re working away on a Photoshop document and suddenly your computer crashes or freezes. You restart Photoshop only to find that your unsaved document is nowhere to be found.

All your hard work, gone in the blink of an eye. Or is it? There are a few things you can try if you find yourself in this situation.

The first thing to do is check your Recover Unsaved Documents folder. To do this, go to File > Recover Unsaved Documents.

If you’re lucky, you’ll see your lost document listed here. If it is, simply click on it and then click Open. Your document will be opened in a new window.

If your document isn’t listed in the Recover Unsaved Documents folder, don’t despair just yet. There’s still one more thing you can try.

Go to your Preferences and click on the File Handling tab. Then, under the Auto Save section, make sure the Enable Auto Save option is checked. This will ensure that Photoshop saves a backup of your document every few minutes, which could come in handy if your computer crashes again.

PRO TIP: If you are working on a Photoshop document and have not saved it, you may be able to recover the unsaved document if you have not closed Photoshop. To do this, go to the File menu and choose Recover Unsaved Document. This will open a dialog box with a list of unsaved documents. Choose the one you want to recover and click Open.
