There are a few ways to add an overlay in Photoshop, but one of the most common and simple ways is to use the ‘Layer’ menu.
First, open the image you want to add an overlay to in Photoshop. Then, open the image or graphic you want to use as your overlay in a separate window.
Next, select the ‘Layer’ menu at the top of the Photoshop window and hover your mouse over ‘New’. From the drop-down menu, select ‘Layer’.
A new layer window will pop up. In the ‘Name’ field, you can name your layer something like ‘Overlay’. Then, make sure the ‘Normal’ option is selected from the ‘Blend Mode’ drop-down menu and click ‘OK’.
Now that you have created a new layer for your overlay, you need to add your chosen image or graphic into this layer. Go back to the separate window containing your overlay image and select it entirely (Ctrl + A).
Then, go back to your Photoshop document and press Ctrl + V on your keyboard to paste the image into your newly created layer. If your overlay is smaller than your base image, press Ctrl + T on your keyboard to enter ‘Transform Mode’.
From here, you can click and drag one of the corner boxes outward to increase the size of your overlay. To move your overlay around within the image, simply click and drag it to wherever you want it positioned.
And that’s it!
