In this article we will learn how to do an animated hover in Figma. We will be using the Paint tool to create our animation. First, we will create a simple rectangle. Then, we will add a frame to our rectangle.

Next, we will select the frame and go to Layer > New Layer. A new layer will appear above our frame. We will name this layer “Hover”.

Now that we have our hover layer, we will select the Paint tool and choose a color for our hover animation. We will use a light blue color for this example.

With the Paint tool selected, we will click on our Hover layer and hold down the mouse button. We will then drag the mouse to the right to create a simple line animation.

We can preview our animation by clicking on the Play button in the upper-left corner of the Figma interface. To export our animation, we will go to File > Export > Animated GIF.

This will open up a new window where we can choose our GIF settings. We recommend using a lower framerate for smoother animations.
